A Town Built on a Spring
Scott County was formed in 1792 from Woodford County, and Georgetown, its seat, grew up around Royal Spring, one of the largest limestone springs in central Kentucky, discovered in 1774 by surveyor John Floyd, who was paid 1,000 acres including the spring itself for his survey work.
What Feeds a Spring Can Also Undermine a Foundation
A spring the size of Royal Spring doesn't form without a well-developed karst system dissolving limestone underground over a very long time, and that same dissolution process, slightly acidic water working through bedrock, is what produces the sinkholes and uneven underground support that foundation repair in this region has to account for. Land near a major limestone spring can see more active dissolution than areas farther from a karst feature that size.

Because Georgetown sits this close to an active limestone spring system, a foundation evaluation should specifically ask whether any dissolution or sinkhole activity has been noted nearby, in addition to the standard checks on soil moisture, grading, and whether pier or support-system work is the right fix.
