Drainage has to account for karst, not just crawl spaces
Inner Bluegrass karst limestone produces irregular underground drainage that a standard crawl-space grading plan doesn't always anticipate, which is why Lexington drainage work sometimes needs a different approach than the rest of Kentucky.
What a drainage plan should specify
- Downspout and grading routes suited to crawl-space construction
- Response plan if excavation reveals a karst void or spring
- Moisture control appropriate to the region's shallow-bedrock lots
- Sequencing drainage correction before structural repair
- Documentation of finished grade for future reference
Structural repair rarely holds without this first
A pier or crawl-space repair done on Lexington's karst ground without correcting how water moves around it tends to need revisiting once the next wet season arrives.
