A Historic District Built Before Modern Codes
Midway was laid out in 1835 and incorporated in 1846, and by 1978 roughly 70% of the town was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Midway Historic District, a dense concentration of 19th- and early-20th-century buildings, including Midway College, founded in 1849.
Old Foundations, Old Settlement Patterns
A foundation built in the 1840s through early 1900s has had well over a century to settle, and it was built without any of the soil engineering or drainage planning used in modern construction. Cracks, sticking doors, and uneven floors in a building this age can be the result of settlement that finished decades ago, ongoing movement, or both, which makes an accurate diagnosis more important than in newer construction.

Given how much of Midway falls inside a 19th-century historic district, a foundation evaluation should distinguish old, stabilized settlement from active movement before recommending pier or support-system work, since treating a long-settled foundation like an active one can do as much harm as ignoring a real problem.
