Founded the Same Year as Its County
Nicholasville was founded in 1798 by Rev. John Metcalf, the same year Jessamine County itself was formed from Fayette County. The county's defining geological feature sits along its southern edge: the Kentucky River Palisades, where the river has cut down through roughly 450-million-year-old Ordovician limestone and dolostone, the High Bridge Group, exposing the erosion-resistant rock as steep cliffs.
Bedrock That Resists Erosion but Still Dissolves
The High Bridge Group limestone is erosion-resistant enough to form tall river cliffs, but like the rest of the Inner Bluegrass's Lexington Limestone, it's still subject to the slow underground dissolution that produces karst features, sinkholes, sinking streams, and uneven support, across the wider region. A foundation in Nicholasville sits on the same general limestone family as the rest of the Inner Bluegrass, even where the surface terrain looks very different near the Palisades.
