A Downtown Shaped by 1862
The Battle of Richmond, fought August 30, 1862, was one of the most complete Confederate victories of the Civil War: of roughly 6,500 Union troops under Gen. William Nelson, only about 1,200 escaped capture. Richmond's historic core, much of it built in the decades on either side of that battle, forms the older layer of the city's housing stock today.
Settlement in a 19th-Century Core
A foundation in Richmond's historic core has had over 150 years to settle into whatever soil and drainage conditions exist beneath it, which means current cracking or unevenness is often the tail end of very old movement rather than a new problem. Newer construction farther from downtown, built under modern codes, tends to show different symptoms tied more to drainage and grading than to age.
