Named for Versailles, Settled Since 1792
Versailles was founded on June 23, 1792, on land owned by a child, Hezekiah Briscoe, whose guardian Marquis Calmes named the town after Versailles, France, in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette; the town was formally incorporated on February 13, 1837. Woodford County itself dates back even further, formed in 1788.
More Than Two Centuries of Settlement
A town with roots this deep has housing spanning well over two centuries, and that long span means foundation conditions vary widely from one property to the next. An 1830s-era in-town lot has had far more time to settle than a newer home built out toward the horse farms on the edge of town, and each needs to be read on its own terms rather than assumed to match its neighbors.
